6 key areas where the cards provide practical help:

  • Supporting the body and nervous system
  • Behavioral activation
  • Questioning thoughts
  • Self-soothing
  • Connection and self-protection
  • Relapse prevention and crisis plan

Why can this card deck be useful in depression?

Because in a depressed state, the very things that would otherwise be easy often become difficult:

  • thinking,
  • deciding,
  • choosing,
  • planning,
  • getting started,
  • asking for help.

The cards take some of this off your shoulders.

You don't have to think through your whole life.

You don't have to decide what the perfect solution would be.

You don't have to do everything at once.

You just choose a card.

You read it.

You try it.

And if you can, you answer the reflection question.

For every exercise, the cards also help you understand why that particular step can help. This is especially important, because in depression the thought 'nothing will help anyway' can easily appear. The short explanation helps you understand, on a professional level too, which psychological mechanism the exercise is based on.

Who is the card deck recommended for?

The card deck may be for those who:

  • are struggling with low mood, lack of motivation or persistent exhaustion,
  • often feel empty, hopeless or self-critical,
  • would like concrete tools for everyday coping,
  • are in therapy and would like to practice what they've learned at home too,
  • have already experienced a period of depression and would like to be better prepared to prevent relapse.

For milder and moderate difficulties the cards can be useful as a self-help tool, and in more severe conditions as complementary support alongside professional help.

The fight against depression is hard, but not impossible.

Depression clouds our thinking while draining our motivation and energy. To successfully overcome depression, we need to find a way to see beyond our negative thoughts and hopelessness and take steps to improve our mental health. The Way Out of Depression cards aim to support you in this – or a loved one who needs support.

If you broke your leg, wouldn't you do everything to help it heal? Depression deserves to be treated just like any other serious illness or injury.

Even in the most severe cases, depression can be treated. Many people have come back from dark places they never thought they would recover from. The sooner we reach out for help, the better, but it's never too late to offer help and take steps towards recovery.

A useful tool for helping professionals too

The cards can be used well in psychological, mental health, coaching, educational or group work too.

They can help:

  • in psychoeducation,
  • as therapeutic homework,
  • in starting self-discovery conversations,
  • in group sessions,
  • in relapse prevention planning,
  • and in giving the client or participant concrete tools they can also practice at home.

The cards do not replace a professional relationship, but they can support the process well.

How should you use the cards?

You don't have to go in order, and you don't have to use all the cards at once.

It's best to always choose the card that most relates to what you're struggling with at that moment.

For example:

  • if you can't get started, choose a behavioral activation card;
  • if you're hurting yourself in your head, choose a card that works with self-criticism;
  • if you're exhausted, choose an exercise that supports the body and nervous system;
  • if you've become isolated, choose a card that helps connection;
  • if you feel your condition worsening, take out the relapse prevention or crisis planning cards.

Most important: one card at a time is enough. In depression, too many choices can also be overwhelming.

About the author

The cards were developed by Bella Bagdi, psychologist and mindfulness teacher, combining the scientifically proven methods of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), behavioral activation, mindfulness and self-compassion.

Frequently asked questions

Does the card deck replace therapy or medication?

No. The Way Out of Depression cards do not replace psychological, psychotherapeutic or psychiatric care.

Recovery from depression often requires a multi-layered approach: we need to work on our personal health and habits, learn to relate to our thoughts differently, ask others for support, and whenever possible, it's worth turning to a professional.

This card deck is a practical tool in this complex support process: it can help ensure that, even on harder days, a concrete exercise, a next step or a self-reflection question is at hand.

Can I use it if I'm in therapy?

Yes. In fact, the cards can complement therapeutic work well.

Many important insights can emerge in therapy, but in everyday life it's often hardest to recall them exactly when we're feeling worse. The cards can help you carry what you've learned in therapy into everyday situations more easily.

You can use them between sessions, as homework, for journaling, for self-observation or to structure a harder day.

How can the cards help with depression?

The cards support you in intervening at small points in the cycles that maintain a depressed state.

For example, they can help you:

  • get started even when you have no motivation,
  • recognize and question self-critical thoughts,
  • return to basic daily routines,
  • reduce isolation,
  • treat yourself more gently,
  • and recognize early signs of worsening in time.

The goal is not for a card to 'cure' you, but to give you a concrete, doable step even when it's hard to think or decide.

What methods are the cards based on?

The cards draw on psychological approaches that are often used in depression too.

For example:

  • behavioral activation,
  • cognitive reframing,
  • mindfulness,
  • self-compassion,
  • self-soothing,
  • working with the body and nervous system,
  • exercises that support connection,
  • relapse prevention and crisis planning.

The aim of the exercises is that you don't just try to 'solve' depression in your head, but work with your thoughts, behavior, body signals and relationships through small, concrete steps.

Why is it in card form?

Because in a depressed state it is often difficult to read longer texts, make decisions or keep in mind what might help.

The card format makes it easier to use:

  • you take out a card,
  • you read the exercise,
  • you try it,
  • then, if you have the strength, you answer the reflection question.

This format can be especially useful when you have little energy but would still like to take a small step for yourself.

Can it be given as a gift?

Yes, but it's important to give it sensitively.

A person struggling with depression doesn't need to feel 'here's a tool, fix yourself'. Much more, they need to feel that they are not alone and that there is support around them.

As a gift it can be truly helpful if you give it with a compassionate message, for example:

'You don't have to know what to do with everything right now. I just wanted to give you something that might be something to hold on to on the harder days.'

What if I don't have the strength to use the cards?

That's completely understandable. In depression, even a simple exercise can seem like too much.

In that case, the goal isn't to use the cards well. It may be enough to just choose a card,

read the title, look at a question, or simply set aside the card you'd like to come back to later. The card deck doesn't ask for performance from you. It's there so that when you have a little room to move, you have a next small step.

When should you definitely see a professional?

If low mood persists and interferes with your daily functioning, if you can't work, study, sleep, eat or stay connected with others, it's worth seeing a psychologist or psychiatrist.

If you have suicidal thoughts, feel the urge to self-harm, or feel you are not safe, seek immediate help.

In Hungary, in a crisis, call 112 or contact the Lelki Elsősegély (Emotional First Aid) Service at 116-123.

In such situations the cards alone are not enough. Human and professional support is needed.
